Your footprint
Know your number.
Five questions, about a minute, and your year drawn as tree rings. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.
Your rings grow as you answer.
Question 1 of 5
Where do you live?
Electricity is cleaner in some places than in others, so this changes the sums.
Which part of Malaysia?
For a company, this is a number you have to find.
Bursa Malaysia asks listed companies to report the emissions from their employees' commuting, and it is one of the hardest figures to collect. The calculator gives a first estimate from one person's journey. A pilot gathers the real figure, with each person's consent.
Every figure, and where it comes from.
Every figure below is an average, so treat the result as a guide and not a measurement. Travel and flights count direct emissions only.
- Getting to work
- Distance each way × 2 × days a week × 48 working weeks × the factor for how you travel: car 0.162, motorbike 0.114, bus 0.102, train 0.031 kg CO2e per km.
- Electricity at home
- kWh a month × 12 × your country's electricity factor ÷ the people at home. Malaysia uses a factor for each region: Peninsular 0.740, Sabah 0.539, Sarawak 0.199 kg CO2e per kWh.
- Flights
- Each short round trip counts as 2,400 km and each long one as 13,200 km, at 0.109 kg CO2e per km in economy, including the extra warming from flying at altitude.
- Food
- A yearly figure for each way of eating, from 2.47 kg CO2e a day (plant-based) to 10.24 kg (meat at most meals), from a study of UK diets.
The total is shown with a margin of a fifth either way. Not counted here: the things you buy, heating and cooking fuel, and the public services you share. Your full footprint is larger.

Questions people ask
Why doesn't it tell me how many trees to plant?
Because trees do not cancel a footprint. They take years to grow, some die, and what they store is an estimate. Reducing is what changes your number. Funding real work close to home is worth doing for its own sake, alongside.
Is anything I enter stored?
No. The sums run in your browser. A shared link carries your answers in the address itself, in the part of it that is never sent to a server.
Why is my number different on other calculators?
Every calculator draws its boundary somewhere. This one counts four parts of life using published averages, and leaves out the things you buy and the fuel you heat or cook with. Use it to see proportions and to find your biggest lever, not as a measurement.
How accurate is it?
It is an estimate, which is why it comes as a range. The factors are averages, and your car, your home and your plate are not average.
Can my company use this for its reporting?
Not as it stands. It estimates one person's footprint. A report needs answers from your own people, gathered with consent and documented. That is what we do in a pilot.
